A resin-saturated liner enters the old pipe, inflates, and cures into a new jointless pipe inside it. Strengths: minimal digging; no joints for roots to attack; handles cracked clay and moderate deterioration well. Limits: the host pipe must hold shape — collapses can’t be lined; bellies remain (the liner follows the sag); the bore narrows slightly; far-gone Orangeburg is a footage call that often lands “no.”

Pipe Bursting

A bursting head pulls through the old line, fracturing it outward while towing new HDPE pipe into place behind it. Strengths: a complete replacement at full diameter with no dependence on the old pipe’s condition — the trenchless answer for collapsed sections and deformed Orangeburg. Limits: entry and exit pits required; congested utilities or certain soils can rule it out.

When the Shovel Wins

Open excavation remains the right call for full collapses, severe bellies (only a trench re-lays pipe at correct slope), shallow lines under plain lawn, and short runs — and in those cases it’s frequently the cheapest bid.
